"Why does my computer freeze?" I was wondering this question myself not too long ago. I would be using my computer like any other time. When all of a sudden my computer freezes up. I cannot access any programs. My mouse is not moving anywhere. I cannot use control/alt/delete. The only thing you can do is turn off your computer manually which is unsafe for your computer and causes you to lose any information were using at the time.

Anyone who has experienced this knows how big of a pain a computer freeze is. And it is even worse for those who like me had this happening to them on a regular basis. It just seems to come out of nowhere and can be a huge nuisance.

What I learned was that the problems were coming from my Windows registry. The registry is the most important and fragile area of your computer. It contains the information that runs all of your software and hardware. As you install, update, and delete programs the registry becomes filled with unwanted information.

This unwanted information causes two problems. First off it slows down your computer considerably. Like a traffic jam, your computer becomes congested with information and needs to be cleaned out to run fast again. The other problem is windows error messages and your computer freezing up. This useless and corrupted information on the registry counteracts with other programs causing serious problems.

The only way to fix this problem and prevent these kinds of computer freezes is to repair the Windows registry. Because it is such a fragile area it was recommended to use a program to clean up registry errors for me. I did so and my computer stopped freezing almost immediately. Even better it began to run like it was brand new!

Computer memory, also known as RAM (random access memory) is the place in the computer where the operating system stores information about applications and data in current use so that they can be quickly reached by the computers processor.

RAM is much faster to read from and write to than the other kinds of storage in a computer, the hard disk, floppy disk, and CD-ROM. However, the data in RAM only stays there only as long as your computer is running. When you turn the computer off, RAM loses its data. When you turn your computer on again, your operating system and other files are once again loaded into RAM, usually from your hard disk. There is technology in the works to fix this problem, but that will take a while to reach the rest of us.

Computer memory can be compared to a persons short-term memory, and the hard disk to the long-term memory. The short-term memory focuses on work at hand, but can only keep so many facts in view at one time. Long term memory is much more abundant, and lasts much longer.

Computers work much like this as well, RAM takes care of the current workload, and the hard drive stores long term data. The faster these two can work, the faster your computer can calculate.

There are three types of computer memory.

The Motherboard must be compatible with the type of memory you want to use. Several Motherboard companies produce Motherboards with SDRAM and DDR slots, which can NOT be used at the same time, but it is nice to have a choice of what you can use.

Each type of RAM also has various speeds at which it works, and the Motherboard must also support these speeds. DDR for example currently comes in either pc2100 , pc2700, & pc3200, while DDR2 comes in pc3200, pc4200, pc5400, pc6400, & pc8000.

RAM also works at various megahertz, limited by the megahertz that the Front Side Bus on your motherboard works (the Front Side Bus, or FSB, is the channel on the motherboard used to transfer information from the CPU to the RAM) so if you have RAM that works at 500 megahertz, and the FSB of your motherboard only runs at 333 megahertz, then 333 megahertz is the fastest your memory can run as well.

One very important note about computer memory, is you do not want to mix various speeds of memory, because the Motherboard will take the slowest speed and dummy all the rest of the fast memory to that slower speed. Here's an example:

You have three sticks of DDR computer memory in your computer, 2 pc2700's, and 1 pc2100. The Motherboard slows down the 2 pc2700's to be the speed of the pc2100, so that they're all working at the same speed.

While this scenario works ok, it is not a good idea, because you have lost the value of the higher speed RAM.

There are a number of anti-adware programs out there that include both removal of adware as well as active protection against adware. Basic Computer Features 101

When buying a desktop computer one of the first things to look at will be its use and individual budget. For example, a machine that will be primarily used for gaming should focus on lots of memory, a powerful processor, enhanced video and graphics, while a computer that will be used for Internet browsing and simple word processing will not need nearly as much frills. This computer-buying guide covers the basics to give you some idea of the important features to look at.

CPU

CPU stands for central processing unit and is the brains of the computer. It is where most of the actual computing takes place and the quality of the processor will greatly determine the performance of the computer. The processor speed is measured in GHz.

Basic Computer Features 101

There are budget processors, mid grade and high-end processors. The high end ones maybe necessary for enhanced computer functions, such as gaming and entertainment, but overall the mid grade types are quite good and will deliver great performance for most any uses. Overall the two best brand names for processors are Intel and AMD.

RAM Memory

RAM memory is used to run programs on the computer and the more RAM you have the better the performance and speed of computing and to avoid slow downs and crashes. Gaming and entertainment need a lot more RAM than regular computer tasks for which 1GB is usually sufficient, but 2GB is really great. At least 3GB, is optimal for gaming and media experiences.

Also, it is a good idea to check and make sure that there are open memory upgrade slots so you can always add more memory as it is fairly cheap and easy to install.

Hard Drives

Hard drives are significant for the speed capacity of computers. Overall, the larger the drive the more storage space and the faster the computer. Optimal is 500GB. 

Optical Drives - CD/DVD/Blu-ray

Most computers these days come with DVD/CD burners, and even if they do not they are cheap and easy to install and come in internal and external versions. Blu-ray is the latest option for burning in high definition format.

External Ports and Connections

Ports are used to attach peripherals, such as printers, Internet, iPods and others. Most important will be to have at least 5 USB ports, one FireWire port as well as an Ethernet connection for Internet and networking. Overall, the more ports you have the more variety and options will be available to add ons.

Monitors

A good monitor is essential for a quality computer experience. The older CRT models have become largely obsolete with the introduction of the LCD screen monitors, however many people still use them and they can still be found at online shopping sites. LCD screen monitors have a superior display with a reduced size due to the flat panel and their lower power consumption over the CRT models.

They come in a variety of sizes and sometimes the larger ones are a better value for the money and make the best experience for gaming, entertainment, such as video watching and are much easier on the eyes.

Have you ever thought to yourself "It sure would be nice to watch TV from my computer" Well, it's not the province of the super rich or ultra nerds anymore. In fact watching TV on your computer is becoming more main stream all the time. Some, including software giant Microsoft feel it is the wave of the future. They've actually staked part of their future on it. Their new Vista operating system has features designed specifically to enable this sort of functionality.

That's great, but where do you get the content? I mean, you just can't have thousands of channels pumped into your computer straight from the Internet, can you? Well, actually you can. There are really a few ways to get TV on your computer. You can buy a TV tuner card. This basically turns your computer into a high tech VCR or personal video recorder (PVR - think TiVO) device. That's pretty darn cool, but there are a couple of downsides to the approach. First of all, as was pointed out earlier, there is a content question. Where do you get it?

Can I Watch TV From My Computer? Yes, You Can

With the TV tuner card method, you're limited to what is available with a terrestrial antenna, or you can hook up basic cable TV service. Anything beyond basic cable won't work using this method, because the content is encrypted by your cable provider. You need their proprietary cable box to decode the really cool channels, or pay per view events. So, while this method of watching TV on your computer is pretty neat, there are definitely limitations with it.

You can use a pay per download service of watching movies on your computer, such as Cinemanow.com or Movielink.com. While they do offer a large amount of downloadable content, it's definitely not live TV. If you're looking for real live TV, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Another method is IPTV. TV content streamed straight over the internet to your computer or set top tuner box. There are two flavors of this. One is through a major service provider such as a cable, satellite or phone company. These are definitely capable of delivering a large amount of high quality content, but just because it's streamed over the Internet doesn't mean you'll just be pluggn' in the net straight to your PC and watching reruns of Sienfeld. You are basically duplicating the cable set top box approach, except the method of content delivery is using IP packets instead of analog or other types of digital cable.

There's still another choice. You can watch streaming live TV directly on your computer or to a TV hooked up to your computer. Using one of several software based solutions, you can watch live TV shows such as sports, prime time network programming, reality TV, and moves. It's live, and even better there are thousands of channels available from all over the world. If you are looking to keep up on world events, or want a different perspective on the news, this is a fantastic resource.

The software streaming solutions really excel for sports, though. You'll find sporting events that are sparsely covered in the U.S., such as soccer, motorcycle and bicycle racing. Another bonus is that you can get coverage of the same event form different networks. Want to see if the local announcers are a bit biased? You can do it. No matter the sport, if it's on TV anywhere in the world, you'll be able to watch it.

So, there are great ways to watch live TV on your computer. You just need to decide how you are going to do it, and grab a cold one!

Set up a simple home filing system to cover the basics, and invest in a couple of sturdy cardboard or plastic filing boxes for the information you should keep log-term or indefinitely.

And a final caution - when you decide that you no longer need to keep certain documents, make sure you shred them and DO NOT put them in the general trash or recycling. Sensitive financial information or personal information should always be DESTROYED to avoid any chance of identity theft that could lead to headaches greater than you can imagine.
